Lois DeAntonio’s commitment to helping the catastrophically
injured began during her years as an emergency room nurse
in New York City. Ms. DeAntonio, who has bachelors’
and masters’ degrees in nursing, wanted to help people
more than one patient at a time, so in her off hours she worked
toward a degree from Brooklyn Law School. Since 1999, she
has been putting that education and dedication to work for
the clients of Raynes McCarty. Ms. DeAntonio has been involved
in many of the firm’s highest profile civil rights cases,
including those surrounding the treatment of patients at city
medical clinics.
A recent success involved a disabled five-year-old girl who
was injured and eventually died as a result of a careless
bus company employee. The Firm’s argument that her rights
under the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation
Act had been violatedthat her disability should have
been properly accommodatedtransformed the disability
bus industry. The case received widespread attention. Ms.
DeAntonio has addressed numerous groups on the outcome and
implications of the case.
Ms. DeAntonio joined the Firm after eight years on the defense
side of the table. A recipient of an American Jurisprudence
Award in Commercial Paper and Transactions, she is also an
accomplished writer; her article probing the Supreme Court’s
complex Lohr decision was published in the distinguished
journal Counterpoint.
